Understanding the Immune System

What is the immune system?

The immune system is responsible for fighting any foreign or harmful microscopic intruders entering it. The immune system acts like your body’s personal military force, ready to combat any foreign invasion.

How does the immune system work?

The first line of action of your body’s immune system is to prevent any foreign bodies from entering inside. It is your body’s natural mechanism to fight them from the very first stage. All body openings have their own mechanism to prevent foreign bodies.

  • Your skin serves as the biggest and most effective barrier.
  • All other openings have their own mechanism to prevent foreign bodies.
  • Your eyes have tear films and eyelids that serve as a physical barrier.
  • Your nose has hair that traps germs, and even if they do manage to enter your respiratory tract, then there’s a mucus lining that will trap these organisms. This mucus gets brushed out of your respiratory tract later on.
  • Your gut has its own way of preventing foreign bodies from entering. There’s a highly corrosive acid present in your stomach that can kill all of these bacterias entering your body.

Now despite having such natural solid barriers, some bacterias and viruses will still end up making their way inside your body. This is where your immune system activates. The immune system consists of this group of cells called white blood cells. White blood cells work towards defending and protecting your body against foreign bodies.

White blood cells are present in your blood, traveling through your entire body to spot and deal with a foreign attack. Some of these cells form a group of tissue and are found in a specific part of your body. Tonsils found in the mouth are an example of such tissue. These tissues are on surveillance duty all the time and can prepare your body before a foreign body even enters.

These immune system’s soldiers are brilliantly smart. They come up with specific ways to attack a particular bacteria or virus. It may take some time before your body can launch an attack against a new bacteria or virus that has entered your body, but here is the fascinating part. Your white blood cells don’t just attack the bacterias present in your body at that time, but they also make copies of themselves in the form of memory cells. Memory cells stay in your body to ensure that they are prepared to fight a particular bacteria when it enters your body again in the future. Isn’t it fascinating?

The same principle is used to make vaccines. A part of bacteria or a dead bacteria is introduced into your body to illicit your immune cells to make these memory cells, so in case the real bacteria enter, your body has already developed immunity against it.

The Bottom Line

You must take care of your health and ensure that your body’s immune system is functioning properly. Without a strong immune system, you will not be able to fight back diseases, viruses, and illnesses. If your immunity is weak, you need to make constant efforts to improve and strengthen your immune levels through regular exercise, a healthy diet, etc.
